The Eastern Caribbean Green Entrepreneurship Initiative was a 3-year project funded by the Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) and implemented by the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) in partnership with the OECS Commission

This initiative offered incubation and accelerator programs, including virtual courses and on-line training, a mentorship program, in-person events, links to investors and networking opportunities in six (6) OECS member states – Antigua & Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, Saint Lucia, St. Kitts & Nevis and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. It targeted green businesses whose business models include solutions aimed at contributing to their country’s climate and sustainable development goals as well as high-potential startups in the growth stage. Both programs prioritized women entrepreneurs and green job creation for women and youth.

ABOUT GGGI

The OECS is a Member of GGGI as a regional body. This membership allows GGGI to work in close partnership with the OECS Commission at the regional level, as well as directly with the governments of the 11 OECS member states at the national level. GGGI maintains an embedded staff presence at OECS headquarters in Saint Lucia and to date has delivered programs in partnership with the governments of Grenada, Dominica, Antigua and Barbuda, and Saint Lucia. Further information can be found at https://www.gggi.org/country/caribbean

In the OECS region, GGGI’s work focuses on the following 4 priority areas:

CLIMATE ACTION

GGGI supports countries in enhancing their ability to expand and fulfill their climate mitigation and adaptation goals. GGGI has supported Saint Lucia, Antigua & Barbuda, and Grenada in revising their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to the Paris Agreement and fast-tracking progress toward those goals.

GREEN INVESTMENT

GGGI works to facilitate mobilization of climate finance to support climate mitigation and adaptation. GGGI has supported Dominica in development of a National Climate Fund which will attract contributions from international funds and donors which can then be used to fund projects to help meet the country’s climate and sustainability goals. In Saint Lucia, GGGI is supporting the government to build institutional capacity, frameworks, and project pipelines to enable the mobilization of climate finance and private investments for NDC implementation and low-carbon development in Saint Lucia. This includes workstreams on green bonds, debt-for-climate swaps, greening the banking sector, and development of Saint Lucia’s flagship green affordable housing project.

GREEN INDUSTRIES

GGGI supports the development of local economies and creation of green jobs through our Eastern Caribbean Green Entrepreneurship Initiative (“Greenpreneurs”) which offers annual incubation and accelerator programs for entrepreneurs running green businesses, defined as any business that contributes to meeting environmental or social goals. The program

prioritizes women entrepreneurs and youth, and includes training, coaching, mentorships and grants and no-interest loans through GGGI’s Green Innovation Fund.

RENEWABLE ENERGY

GGGI is working to support the Eastern Caribbean Solar Challenge, which aims to increase the use of solar energy in the OECS member states. GGGI is facilitating creation of a more enabling policy and regulatory environment to stimulate investment in solar by providing embedded technical support to electricity regulators, including Saint Lucia’s National Utilities Regulatory Commission, and running interactive workshops and knowledge exchanges at the regional level to ensure that energy sector stakeholder have the skills and knowledge to create effective policy and regulatory environments for renewable energy. GGGI is also supporting the Solar Challenge by designing, structuring, and facilitating financing of rooftop solar PV projects across OECS countries.
